meaning of trust in a relationshipDo you know what makes a relationship work? Quite often, it is not the things that might first come to mind.

For example, variety may be the spice of life, but predictability and stability can be more important in a relationship. The following seven techniques can help you to grow your relationship and build the level of trust between you and your partner.

1.  Be consistent. True, it doesn’t hurt to spice things up every now and then, to go to a new restaurant or give a surprise gift, but the strongest relationships are built on a foundation of consistency and reliability. This is what builds trust in a relationship.

2. Let your actions match your words. If you promise to meet your partner at a certain time, do everything in your power to uphold your promise. This is not difficult if you are careful not to make promises that you can’t keep. On the other hand, you should be willing to do favors for your partner just as your partner does favors for you.

3. Realize the importance of having a fundamental belief in your partner’s abilities. If you don’t respect your partner’s competency, you won’t be able to develop the trust in the relationship that it requires. Of course, no one is competent at everything, but if you believe your partner lacks competence in some of the core aspects of maintaining a relationship, you will never be able to build trust in that relationship.

4. Avoid keeping secrets. These can ruin the trust in a relationship. Keep important things out in the open, since such things will usually come out anyway. Secret keeping can require an enormous effort on your part, effort that could be better utilized in building the relationship.

5. Be willing to communicate your needs to your partner. Don’t assume that he or she will intuitively grasp your desires. Of course, you shouldn’t be selfish, but if you are unwilling to communicate your needs, your partner may be unwilling to communicate his or her needs to you.

6. While you should be responsive to your partner’s needs, you should be willing and able to say no when the situation calls for it. Remember that you may not be able to meet all of your partner’s requests, and you should avoid promising something that you will not be able to deliver.

7. Finally, always seek out growth in your relationship. After all, you have to dig in the dirt if you wish to plant a flower. Likewise, every relationship will have its share of pain, crisis or turmoil. While unpleasant, these can eventually become the fertilizer for the future growth of the relationship. If you accept the difficulties in life and do what needs to be done to deal with them, it can make your relationship stronger as a result.

Every lasting relationship is bound to encounter some pain, but if you work through it, you can grow not only as an individual but as a couple as well. This is the key to a strong and lasting relationship.
