Are you skeptical about online dating? That’s good! A little skepticism is a healthy thing. Besides, it was only fairly recently that online dating became an accepted and mainstream part of the dating scene.
It wasn’t always so. In fact, a bit of dialogue in the movie Cruel Intentions referred to e-mail as “the last bastion of the social recluse,” and online dating has been a favorite target of comedians and sitcoms.
Obviously, however, times have changed. Today, people the world over are coming to see online dating as a perfectly legitimate way to find one’s romantic partner.
To a large degree, this is due to the growing role of the Internet in our lives. In fact, a study conducted by journalism.org found that the Internet is used today in some form or other by 70% of Americans.
In terms of raw numbers, 137 million Americans went online with some regularity at the time of the study, and this number is only likely to have increased since then. The proliferation of broadband access, as opposed to dial-up, helps to streamline the time spent online. And let’s not forget the number of people who access the Internet on their smartphones!
While the rate of increase of Internet users has plateaued in recent years, those who do connect tend to spend more time online. In addition, the Internet has become a more indispensable tool for conducting the business of one’s everyday life, from ordering pizza to finding a physician. This increased reliance has played a huge role in fostering acceptance of online dating as well.
TV and radio ads promote online dating as a serious way to meet people. And a large number of married people can also point to the effectiveness of online dating! Such personal endorsements affect our views and opinions in a way that television ads never can.
Since so many people have used online dating successfully, there’s a good chance that somebody you know can share their experiences with you. Who knows? Maybe the married couple next door met each other through an online dating service. Or, maybe a coworker found her significant other in a chat room.
If you take the time to ask around and encourage personal stories, you are sure to get some useful feedback as to the reliability of online dating.
As the popularity of the Internet has grown, so too has online dating. No matter what kind of match you are looking for, you’re sure to find a dating site that focuses on it. The numbers are just in your favor!
Internet dating is no longer a fringe activity. It has now become a viable and accepted romantic avenue for today’s hectic lifestyle.
